Produced from roughly 1996 to 2005, the IWC Pilot's Watch Doppelchronograph ref. 3713 was the second pilot timepiece from the brand to include a split-second chronograph. It was crafted in platinum, yellow gold, or stainless steel with varied dial configurations and multilingual day-discs, with the steel version offered on a strap or bracelet and a limited run of five platinum pieces on bracelets. Following 2003, the series exclusively utilized Spitfire-style dials, including the ref. IW3713-31, which features a stainless steel case paired with a black 'Spitfire' dial.
