The Alaska Project, led by Pierre Chopard from the late 1960s to 1973, aimed to improve the Speedmaster for the low temperatures of space. Swiss patent CH 537170, granted on 31 May 1973, protected an outer case against extreme temperature variations, while the dial was coated with zinc oxide for superior resistance to solar radiation. NASA deemed the prototype unnecessary, so it remained a prototype; this example, one of the first, has a cushion-shaped titanium case and is pictured with an additional heat shield.
