Standard mechanical watches can lose accuracy when exposed to magnetic fields between 50 and 100 gauss, a challenge for many scientists. Rolex addressed this in 1956 with the Milgauss, the first watch designed to withstand 1,000 gauss, as indicated by the French term 'mille.' The reference 116400 launched in 2007, with the non-GV black dial version discontinued in 2013. The Z-Blue model joined the collection in 2014.
