Standard mechanical watches often lose precision when exposed to magnetic fields between 50 and 100 gauss. To assist scientists working in high-field environments, Rolex developed the Milgauss in 1956, named for the French word for thousand. The reference 116400 launched in 2007, with the non-GV black dial version ending production in 2013. The Z-Blue variant joined the collection in 2014.
